Force Switch and Faint Switch explained

Post by LoneWarrior » Sun Feb 03, 2019 5:33 pm

Here is a quick guide explaining two of PvP system's major bugs - Faint Switching and Force Switching. Both of them are unexpected and carry the potential to disrupt battles.

Faint Switching

- What is faint switching?
In the given explanation, the two people referenced to are, a player and their opponent.
When a player's Pokemon faints during a battle, they are supposed to switch into a different Pokemon to continue the battle.
During the new switch in, the opponent's Pokemon stays as it is, and the player brings the new Pokemon. And then both of them are prompted for the next turn. This is the official mechanism for Pokemon battles, so this is how this should go. (You may know this if you played the Official Pokemon games, or battled in Pokemon Showdown or other simulators).

What happens in PL is, sometimes when the player's Pokemon faints, they are asked for a new switch in but at the same time, the opponent is prompted for a switch in too. This is because of a bug in the battle system, and is not supposed to happen. If the opponent decides to switch Pokemon in such cases, it is called faint switching.

- How is this against rules?
When the opponent switches in a new Pokemon on the same turn as the player's Pokemon fainted (and they switched in), it is considered that the opponent gained an additional turn, which makes the battle unfair. Also, since this is a bug, no one is allowed to abuse the game bugs. The players should abide by the rules to make the battles as fair as possible.

- How to avoid faint switching?
If you are given a prompt to switch into a new Pokemon on the same turn as your opponent's Pokemon fainted, you can click to switch into the same Pokemon you currently have on field. This way, you avoided to faint switch, because the Pokemon on field didn't change. Nevertheless, you are allowed to switch your Pokemon in the Next Turn.

- My opponent faint switched. What should I do?
The first course of action could be to ask the opponent if they know what Faint Switching is - explaining them what it is, and warn them to not do it in the future.
If they are aware of it, yet are doing it intentionally, you can report the player.
In the report, you require screenshots of your Pokemon getting fainted, the opponent Faint switching on the turn you switched your new Pokemon in. You can also take video proof of the entire battle (record the screen).
It will also solidify the evidence if you have proof of your opponent intentionally Faint switching (they they already know what it is, yet doing it).

Force Switching

- What is force switching?
Force switch is when a player is forced to switch in middle of a battle.
For example, when the system suddenly asks you to switch your Pokemon on the field, so you are forced to change your Pokemon.
But your opponent gets an extra turn. This is not opponent's fault and nothing can be done about it.
This is called Faint Switching.

Comparing Force Switching and Faint Switching

Similarities :
- Both of them are a result of bugs in PL's PvP system.
- In both the cases, one player receives an unfair advantage over the other.

Differences :
- The player who Force Switches receives a disadvantage, while the player who Faint Switches gains an advantage.
- If you are a victim of Faint Switch (your opponent did it), you can report them in the way explained above. But if you are a victim of Force Switch, nothing can be done about it.
- The above point is valid because Faint Switch can be avoided (explained earlier), whereas Force Switch cannot be.

If you have any queries, or if there is a mistake in any part of post, feel free to ask.

If you have lots of debuffs and the game makes you can faint switch while your opponent is sending in thier next Pokémon, can you switch to the same Pokémon and have it’s buffs/debuffs reset?
