How to Set Forum Profile Picture Using Online Image

Post by Hukora » Sun Feb 17, 2019 5:30 am

Setting the forum profile picture is a little tricky so here is a guide to help you set a forum profile picture using an image you find online and without using a Gravatar account. Hope this helps!

How to Set Forum Profile Picture
1. View your profile settings by clicking on this link ucp.php?i=ucp_profile&mode=avatar (much quicker). You can also manually get there with the following steps:
  • Click on your username (top right corner of screen)
    Image
  • User Control Panel
    Image
  • Profile tab
    Image
  • Edit Avatar tab.

2. Select your profile settings.
  • In "Avatar Type" (red arrow), select "Remote Avatar"
  • In "Link off-site" (blue arrow), paste the website link to your image in the box.
  • In "Avatar Dimensions (green arrow), select the avatar dimensions to be proportional to the image from the website. For example, if it is a square image then you can use 125 x 125. The maximum dimensions are 150 (width) x 125 (height).
  • Click submit at the bottom of the page. If everything is correct, you should have your image set for your profile!

Troubleshooting
Potential error messages from the "Link off-site" section
  • "Please enter a URL": You inputted something that is not an acceptable URL (such as a URL with portions removed or added, or simply random letters/symbols/numbers like I did). Please input an acceptable URL.
  • "The URL you specified is invalid": The URL is not accepted because it does not contain the correct prefix (e.g. http://) and/or file extension (e.g. .png, .jpg), per Nexus (thank you!). You can select another image, or you can download the image and upload it to an acceptable image sharing website such as Imgur.org. Note that once you upload the image onto Imgur, you will need to right-click on the Imgur image, select "Open Image in New Tab," then use the URL of the tab with the image that you had opened.
  • "The value you entered is too long": The length of the URL is too long. You can select another image with a shorter URL length, or you can download the image and upload it to an acceptable image sharing website such as Imgur.org for a shorter URL length. Note that once you upload the image onto Imgur, you will need to right-click on the Imgur image, select "Open Image in New Tab," then use the URL of the tab with the image that you had opened.
  • "It was not possible to determine the dimensions of the image. Please verify that the URL you entered is correct": The game cannot automatically determine the avatar dimensions from the image and you did not manually input avatar dimensions. Input the the URL again and select the appropriate avatar dimensions.
  • "The submitted avatar is ___ wide and ___ high. Avatars must be at least 20 wide and 20 high, but no larger than 150 wide and 125 high": The game automatically determined the avatar dimensions from the image but cannot accommodate those dimensions because you did not manually input avatar dimensions. Input the the URL again and select the appropriate avatar dimensions.
Potential error messages from the "Avatar Dimensions" section
  • "Value must be less than or equal to ___": The avatar dimensions are too large. Select a value that is less than or equal to 150 for the width and 125 for the height.
  • "Value must be greater than or equal to ___" The avatar dimensions are too small. Select a value that is greater than or equal to 20 for the width and 20 for the height.
  • "Please enter a number": You did not input a number, silly person. Please input a number that is between 20 to 150 for the width and 20 to 125 for the height.

Please let me know if you find any other error messages that I can add to this list and find a solution to.

For some reason, when I did what you typed down, it popped up,'' The value you entered is to long.''
How do I make it shorter?

Are you referring to the URL that is too long, or the image dimensions? If it is the URL, you might need to find a similar image with a shorter URL. If it is the image dimensions, then you will need to set the dimensions to less than 150 (width) and 125 (height).

That would depend on the exact url you're trying to use. Does it have the correct prefix (e.g. http://) and file extension (e.g. .png, .jpg)?
